DRAWING ANALOGIES

8 Professional Training Credits for Architects
Permanent School of Living, in collaboration with the architect Andrea Ponsi and under the patronage of the Order of Architects of Siena, organizes a theoretical and practical workshop on analog design.
The training proposal aims to address the theme of drawing, one of the most important skills of an architect. Acquiring skills in hand drawing can only enrich the possibilities offered by computer design. The evolution of architecture with respect to historical times and geographical locations occurs mainly through analogical comparisons. Architecture generates other architecture following principles of similarity, similarity, contrast. The history of architecture can be read as the continuous succession of changes triggered by analogical reasoning.
The study day provides practical suggestions on how analogical thinking can be put to good use through drawing: an operation that intends to focus on the main purpose of the architect, or the application of his own skills to the conception of new works.
The proposed exercises are based on the simplicity of the graphic tools, such as sketchbook, pencil, pen and, possibly, brush and watercolors. The method involves four operational phases: observation, analysis, abstraction and analogy. While the observation and analysis drawings are part of the academic and professional curriculum of the architects, the abstraction and analogy design are less explored; by abstraction we mean the subjective interpretation in graphic form of architectural elements belonging to the reference model, by analogy an original design proposal inspired by the model and applied to a new and hypothetical context.
The course is open to anyone wishing to deepen the topic and entitles them to the acquisition of 8 Professional Training Credits for Architects
