set design for “tosca”
at festival di preggio
preggio (pg)2011
Helping the great director Antonello Madau to adapt the monumental architecture of La Tosca to a small theatre put together in the walled-in garden in the clergy house in Preggio is certainly a challenge that I could not refuse.
Few means for one of the most realistic operas staged in the three most important architectural settings in Italian history: the church Sant’Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese and Castel Sant’Angelo.

The scenes should perform together with the actors, this is the objective of the set design for director Madau, who wants the set to be realistic, just like Puccini wanted his sets to refer to the historical era and the historical events concerned.
I chose to convey these ideas through large details that would perform together with Puccini's singers and music, creating a sense of realism that is out-of-scale, sensational and almost excessive, as is Roman art and architecture from the '600.
