The contest is about the conversion of the premises of the former Saint Gallen Hospital in Florence. The main objective of our proposal is to change this forgotten place into a place where relations flourish and grow, by highlighting the quality of the city through the quality of public space and the ability to combine private spaces and collective places.

The project envisages the hostel as one single connective tissue consisting of a system of garden squares and residential, tourist and cultural buildings. The project divides the concerned cadastral group into the theatre, the two monasteries and the residential part.

On the ground floor, there are neighbourhood shops, creative workshops and privately managed exhibition spaces. The hostel will encourage the development of inclusive policies, so that the cultural offer is financially sustainable and accessible to the university system. The hostel will be located in via Sant'Anna, in a new building to be built with its own driveway and private underground car parks. The theatre and the creative workshops will be located opposite the hostel.

The restoration aims at making the premises usable again through a programme of necessary and expected urban services. The method adopted is based on the “un-stylistic” stratification in balance between tradition and innovation, by improving the identity and function of the places and institutions involved, which should no longer be considered as mere containers but as elements that encourage an exchange of ideas between public and private enterprises. For this reason, it is necessary to think of an urban process capable of immediately revitalizing the city by making it plat an active role through a participatory project.
