malpaga (bg)2012
An important massive and strongly geometric building that creates a horizontal and vertical reference point in the area. A building where formal economy becomes the key to increasing the necessary tension between light, shapes and materials. From an urbanistic point of view, the architecture of the new church in Cavernago aims to create a new urban centre of gravity that does not cut itself out from its surroundings but blends into and adds itself to the rigorous and perhaps banal orthogonality of the urban landscape, thus placing itself on the territory as if it was trying to become immune from external space, which has grown too far from the complexity of nature and its cycles.

The massive and tectonic grandeur of the building, its pure and monolithic archaic shape will make it an attraction.

However, as one gets closer, they can’t help noticing its lightness and that despite its grandeur, its style is neither rhetorical nor monumental.

Medieval symbolic minimalism is reinterpreted from a contemporary angle, not only as concerns the classical hermetic symbols of the golden section and shape waves, but also because it establishes the ritual hierarchy (which was carefully respected by the liturgist in the design group).

Inside, the grandeur of the external volume unexpectedly turns into architecture of light, which enhances the performance of the ritual, the liturgy in the various areas of worship, without interrupting the unity of the place. The fronts without almost any windows – as no windows are needed given the intended use of the building and the incoherent external context – are characterized, thanks to the careful use of materials and coatings, by opaque walls almost imperceptibly alternated with translucent and opalescent walls, which unexpectedly flood the interiors with light.
