viareggio (lu)2014
Urban regeneration is not a utopia if architecture, urban planning and mobility are addressed in a single project in which possible urban scenarios are immediately shared and participated in. Critical issues need proposals for change that help to find courageous solutions. A city is like the garden that a man and a woman were tasked with guarding and cultivating. Given the huge amount of financial resources it requires, the building of the parish church cannot be used only for liturgical purposes.

The outside of the church should welcome people and make them go in spontaneously: children, women, businessmen, workers, the unemployed, important people and simple people. It should prepare people for hospitality and inclusion. Its wide and simple yet rigorous form will be welcoming and characterized by a recognizable architecture capable of “containing”. Sharing the project with the community from the very beginning should create a sense of belonging, pride and identity. The church will be the place for everyone, the first place where the inhabitants of the neighbourhood will gather together to welcome others safely, where parishioners will meet newcomers. The church should therefore become a part of the site and its nature, which, even though it is anthropized and artificial, is precious and therefore needs to be protected and taken care of.

Despite their austere appearance, the fronts of the church should make people want to go in. The Giardino dei Gentili will be designed with the same care and attention as the church and, as was the case with the project for the church, the project for the garden will be shared in every detail. This urban square will be almost completely free, except perhaps for a few large plane trees offering some shade in the hot season.
